Triggerfish Season is Open – Book Your Pensacola Fishing Charter Today!

Triggerfish season is officially open in Florida’s Gulf waters — and if you haven’t targeted gray triggerfish yet, this is the year to do it. Kings Fishing Charters is currently booking offshore trips out of Pensacola for anglers ready to get on the reefs and put a bend in the rod.

2026 Gray Triggerfish Season Dates

The Gulf gray triggerfish season runs in two windows each year: March 1 through May 31 for the spring season, and August 1 through December 31 for the fall run. Right now we’re in the heart of the fall season — the water is warm, the reefs are holding fish, and fall weather in the Gulf means calmer seas and more comfortable conditions than peak summer.

Current Gulf regulations per FWC:

  • Season: August 1 – December 31
  • Minimum size: 15 inches fork length
  • Bag limit: 1 fish per person (within the 20 reef fish aggregate)
  • Required: State Reef Fish Angler Designation if fishing from a private vessel

Note: Regulations can change. Always verify current rules at MyFWC.com before your trip — your charter license covers all guests on board.

Where We Find Triggerfish in Pensacola

Gray triggerfish are a reef fish through and through. In Pensacola, we find them holding tight to offshore structure — natural hard bottom, artificial reefs, wrecks, and ledges in the Gulf of Mexico. Captain Tim King knows these spots well, and triggerfish are a regular target on our offshore fishing charters throughout the fall season. They don’t typically roam open water, which means the key is knowing where the structure is — and that’s exactly what a local captain brings to the table.

What Makes Triggerfish Such a Great Catch

Don’t let their size fool you. Gray triggerfish punch well above their weight when it comes to the fight. Once hooked, they dive hard for the reef, using short bursts of power and erratic direction changes to try to break the line or wrap you around structure. Their tough skin, powerful jaws, and stubborn personality make them a genuinely satisfying catch on light tackle.

And the table fare? Exceptional. Triggerfish have firm, white, mildly sweet meat that many Gulf anglers rank above Red Snapper. If you’re keeping fish for dinner, triggerfish is one of the best reasons to head offshore right now.

Why Book a Triggerfish Charter This Fall?

  • Crowds thin out after Labor Day — more reef to yourself.
  • Fall seas are typically calmer and more comfortable than peak summer.
  • Triggerfish season overlaps with Amberjack, Vermillion Snapper, and Kingfish — rarely just one species in the box.
  • Prime dates fill fast — booking ahead guarantees your spot.
